Standing Rock Reservation (Present) I grew up on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, and graduated from McIntosh High School in 2015. McIntosh is a Title 1 school with close to 40% of the students are Native Americans. The school provides free lunch to all students, school supplies , and transport students as far as 50 miles. It was an honor to have such a diverse group of friends, and see their traditions first hand.
Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch (Fall 2017) My first semester at the University of Mary, I had the privilege of touring the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch in Bismarck, ND. The purpose of this tour was to develop learning accommodations for students with special needs. While there, I was able to interact with students who faced emotional disorders, behavioral problems, and juvenile delinquents. The experience was very eye opening; I learned many new strategies to help students.
Marketplace for Kids (Spring 2018) For diversity class, I have participated as a volunteer where I presenting North Dakota Heritage to students from all across North Dakota. I also got the opportunity to conduct tours with my fellow classmates.
Local Food Pantry (Elgin, ND)
Diversity is not limited to race, it includes homeless individuals and those who come from every background like low socioeconomic status or poverty. I was able to volunteered some of my time at the local food pantry in Elgin, ND. I learned that many people struggle to pay for meals and I realized how lucky I am to be able to have food on my table. After volunteering at the food pantry I am more aware of some of the problems students face outside of school. As a teacher I will do my best to accommodate these students and provide them with the best education.
